Make Your Home More Energy Efficient :: Part 5
Hope you enjoy these heating and cooling energy efficiency tips. There were several I had never thought about, so I'm headed off to the backyard to inspect my AC when this blog is done!
12. Clean or Replace Filters at Least Once a Month - Dirty filters make your system work harder and run longer than necessary.
13. Shade Outside Air Conditioning Units - A/C units shaded by trees or other means work more efficiently and use up to 10% less electricity.
14. Clean Your A/C's Condenser / Evaporator Coils at the Beginning of the Season - Clean coils lower your energy costs, extend the unit's life and provide cleaner air for you to breathe. The fi coils on the outside A/C unit can be washed with a hose. Coils on the inside units may be difficult to get to and may reqire a trained technician.
15. Keep Debris and High Grass Away from the Condenser - These obstacles block the airflow to the unit. Blockage makes the condenser work harder and run longer.
16. Set Your Thermostat at 78 in the Summer and 68 in the Winter - Each degree cooler or warmer will increase your energy use by 6 to 8%. For instance, setting your thermostat at 72 in the summer could increase energy use by up to 40%! One of the best ways to save energy dollars is to use less air conditioning and heating.
17. If You Have Central Air Conditioning, do Not Close Vents in Unused Rooms - While this may have worked in older non-insulated homes, it doesn't work with today's energy systems - forced air and heat according to the Consumer Energy Center. Closing off vents could increase the pressure and cause leaks in your ducts causing you to use more energy rather than less.
18. Keep Window Shades Closed During the Summer - This can minimize the amount of head that adds up in your home.
19. Keep Shades Open on Southern Windows During the Winter - Let the sun shine in and take advantage of the natural heating during the day to warm up your home.
20. Caulk, Weatherstripping and Insulation - Caulk and weatherstrip doors and windows that leak air. Caulk and seal air leaks where plumbing, ducting, or electrical wiring penetrate through walls, floors, ceilings, and soffits over cabinets. Use weatherstripping to make doors more air tight. Install garage door weatherstripping.
