Douglas County Tops Nation for Higher Wages

Douglas County topped the nation in the fourth quarter for the highest increase in average weekly wages, the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Wednesday.

The suburban county posted a 26.1 percent year-over-over gain in wages, or $244 higher, while the U.S. average was just 2.5 percent more, or $23 higher.

The new report provides details for the 334 largest counties in the United States. Among those counties, 305 had higher wages than at the end of 2008. The average weekly wage fell the most in St. Louis, with a drop of 33.9 percent.

The average weekly wage in the United States was $942 in the fourth quarter. For Colorado, the average was $965, or 3.5 percent higher than a year earlier.

Among Colorado counties included in the report, wage hikes ranged from 0.7 percent in Weld to the 26.1 percent in Douglas.

For Denver, the average weekly wage rose 3.4 percent, to $1,154, while in Boulder it climbed 3.2 percent, to $1,069. Wages were up 3.8 percent in Arapahoe, to $1,094, and 4.4 percent in Jefferson, to $969.
